Posted by admin on Sunday, November 16 @ 22:39:57 EST (167 reads)

Citizen of the Year 2006, Dr. Nanci Wood-Huels, was honored primarily for her efforts as a volunteer with many local projects.  She sets a wonderful example of how to become involved in your community. When we asked for memories or comments about Altamont, she submitted a list with 27 items on it entitled, “Why I live in Altamont”. Here are a few of  favorites:
#09 Because we don’t have a square like everyone else, we have a triangle.
#13 Because if you forget to listen to the weather report, you can always ask Kenny Jones in front of the Post Office.
#17 Because I know my City government is frugal with taxpayer’s dollars. The Chief of Police doesn’t even have hubcaps.
#25 Because in Altamont, I can still root for an Indian and not be politically incorrect

Posted by admin on Sunday, November 16 @ 22:28:49 EST (127 reads)

2003 Citizen of the Year went to Bob & Shirley Harder.  Bob & Shirley were teachers for many years, in addition to their participation in the trips to Appalachia, they are active in their church, and Bob was a an Altamont fireman and Effingham County Fair Board Member for many years.

Shirley included a poem in her response:
“We love the town we have
and the chamber members for all they do.
One could survive without leaving Altamont.
We hear good comments from those passing through.

We Love our volunteers!
Sometimes many, sometimes few.
They make our town special
With time, talents and donations too.

Our diary is full of memories,
But too many is a bore,
So now it’s time to give you…..2004!
